Foals at the Plug, Sheffield, 10th October
In an overcrowded room flocks of children are looking scarily to the ceiling, some with more fear on in their eyes than others as lead singer of Cut Off Your Hands swings from the lighting rigg, towering above the audience below. His shoes suddenly highlight with a pointed heel as the rigg swings back and forth- you just can't look. Yet it's more dangerous than rock'n'roll, mainly due to the fact Cut Off Your Hands sound like a cross between Dexy's Midnight Runners and The Ordinary Boys. Their energy onstage however is compelling as the lead singer's electrifying moves steal the performance.
Foals are now in a different league- soundtracking the lives of every indie teenager, they're the one band everyone wants to say they've seen. Tonight the room is packed with little NME clones, with straightened hair, pointy shoes and checkered shirts. It even took me at least ten minutes to make sure the band onstage weren't actually riotous teens, yet Foals remain quite unique in their field. With angular guitars and a wailing inconsistent voice, it's a surprise how many people have latched onto the sound, as it's not particularly accessible, but as a crowd member jumps into the pit, hitting a glitterball, it's quite clear today's youth have made up their minds. As the gig progresses more and more teenagers make their presence known.
Whether its the two boys who stroked the guitarists feet as he stood on an amp, or the girl who stood centre stage for the entire last two songs 'capturing' the whole thing on her digital camera- Foals love is definitely in the air.
