Dizzee Rascal, Newham Generals at the Leadmill, February 18

Many of the audience here tonight are not the usual rap crowd. Intrigued at the novelty of Dizzee Rascal’s increasing collaborations with the indie scene no one is here to see a hardcore hip hop group tonight. So it comes with a little surprise to find the support group Newham Generals to be the ultimate rap stereotype.

Along with tracks such as ‘Bell Them Slags’ they spend their time shouting on repeat “Make some noise Sheffield!” and provide little else. Dizzee Rascal however is the perfect example of someone at the top of their field. Singles from Boy In Da Corner and his latest offering Maths+English provide the highlights of the night, yet it’s great just to watch the star in action.

Within seconds he’s managed to blow his predecessors from the stage and clearly claim it his own, as he struts around with the highest confidence despite his surprisingly small frame. As ‘Jus’ A Rascal’ appears the room quickly erupts and Dizzee Rascal has proven himself to deliver a star performance again, whatever your taste in music.
