Los Campesinos at the Leadmill, Sheffield, February 17

Tonight as Los Campesinos strut onstage they're not their usual selves. With their heads to the floor, and hoods up you wouldn't believe they are the same band who have prompted students everywhere to dance in their bedrooms with a single look of glee in the mirror. Maybe the tour schedule has finally caught up with the seven member troupe or they're just having a bad day but as they launch into the first track of the night there's some seriously angry looks darting across the stage. However as 'Death to Los Campesinos' appears lead singer Gareth's loss of voice is clearly keeping the group on edge.

After a few sound troubles the band begin to relax, but as guitarist Tom is thrust into singing, while playing and clutching a beater in his mouth, it's clearly holding the group back. But their energy onstage, despite this is inspiring as they leap through their debut album. Sure, they're incredibly twee and Gareth's incessant ranting places the band in a bold position, but as soon as they burst into song they become a whole whirlwind of excitement onstage. From their cutsie boy/girl harmonies to the violin instrumentation they're a little nugget of pop fun from start to finish.
