Morrissey at the Dome, January 30

As far as rock icons go, no one is more loved than Morrissey. Among a sea of quiffs and flowing shirts every other person inside the Dome tonight looks freakily like Morrissey's double, and before the singer even ventures onstage there are calls for the great man himself by the throng of adoring fans. Of course at this time in his career, where the singer's best hits are behind him, his legacy has been vastly blown out of proportion. Yet it's hard to argue with a man who is so sure of himself. As he strolls onto the stage boasting a shirt buttoned to his midriff, opening with 'How Soon Is Now' he immediately pulls out all the classics to overwhelm the crowd.

We're treated to 'Last of the International Playboys', 'I Just Want to See the Boy Happy' and 'That's How People Grow Up' but after such a strong start the set takes a nosedive through a long jamming session and barely raises its' stakes. Although the appeal is obvious, he really fails to excite a new audience, keeping to a setlist for the fans rather than instant crowd pleases.

Also his consistent arrogance is enough to push any fan onto the fence. As he swoops into the audience fans are whisked away shouting "I touched him!" With a shear moment of glee in their eye. Yet the legendary singer's set is cut short (possibly over recent throat problems) and as he finishes with 'First of the Gang to Die' the whole gig is a steady build to a very average show. So maybe you do have to be a hardcore fan to appreciate Morrissey- if that's the case I'm afraid you'll have to count me out.
