Frank Turner at the Corporation, April 3

Technically there is nothing to divide Frank Turner away from the James Blunt's of the world. Full of wholesome melodies, he fails to stand out among the other singer songwriters in today's scene. Tonight the Corporation is filled to the rafters of young folk but you can't help thinking it's either down to Rock Sound's increasing coverage or the interest in Turner's previous group Million Dead. Either way these are hardcore fans, and definitely in for a little punk rock attitude rather than a soothing lullaby.

So it's a good job Turner still has the fire in his belly. Previously touring as a solo artist we are now treated to 'Turner and band' which includes several solo sets by band members before the headline slot even begins. However as a group the band work well, Turner is ultimately hidden behind a variety of characters on stage. Whereas before his rough and ready performance was laid bare now it's obscured behind a panel of instruments to the point where you can't hear Turner's only original aspect- the lyrics. Turner however is a great performer and shows a natural light to the stage that many songwriters lack.

During the last two songs as he embarks on stage with just an acoustic guitar for company the set takes to a campfire atmosphere with many shouting back the lyrics to the performer on stage. It's also the first time we can actually hear what Turner is trying to achieve, with original witty lyrics that make him a step above the rest.
