Brian Jonestown Massacre. The Cockpit, Leeds, July 11
Despite an age of personal failings, an inconsistent line-up and a dire reputation the Brian Jonestown Massacre still have a hardcore fanbase relative to any British cult band.
Tonight we arrive to find the room packed and the group on-stage early, however any hope of an extended set is shattered immediately. As the band mumble into the microphone while aimlessly wandering around the stage they don't appear to be their usually charged selves. Between each song is a five minute break with the band never hesitating to leave the stage in favour of another guitar jam. As the audience talk among themselves material is kept to a bare minimum with recent releases prioritised over old favourites. At times Anton's vocals are barely heard over the strong rhythm section. It is not until guitarist Frankie Emerson steps up to the mic that the group show a bit of life.
Maybe the touring schedule is taking its' toll (two nights later the group have a bust up on stage) however tonight the BJM appear to be all style, no substance, it just might take a while for the cult fanbase to realise this.
