Interpol at the Academy, Sheffield, July 9
Interpol are not the most reliable of groups. Many a time friends have come bounding back from a festival field claiming them to the biggest disappointment of the bill. Dreary, dull and boring are heard more times in relation to this band than most.
However as Ladytron's set is lost in the vast bunker of the academy, Interpol are about to show their true colours. Opening with 'Pioneer' before launching into hit 'Slow Hands' the group are surprisingly upbeat. Singer Paul Banks remains stagnant as he is coupled with the energetic partnership of Kessler and Dengler on guitar and bass respectively. Each member is powerful and energetic, containing all the things that have halted Interpol's performance in previous years. Maybe a break has done the band some good, either way they make sure they deliver a set fit for any fan, containing 'Obstacle One', 'Hands Away', 'Narc' and 'Roland'. Banks and Kessler even appear to be enjoying themselves as another soaring guitar solo is set to Kessler's slippery movements on-stage.
The group still remain in their subdued manner, however their forceful nature now fills the room and adds a surprisingly uplifting spirit. This is, however helped by the audience who continue to shout requests at every available opportunity. Finally ending with fan favourite 'Obstacle Two' the group prove themselves to be far from their reputation. Dreary, dull, boring? Never.
