Operator Please at The Priory, Doncaster, July 22

Tonight among the balloons and fizzy pop this usual nightclub has been transformed into a youth club. Normally it's enough to tip any self respecting music fan over the edge, however tonight the age difference between the band on-stage and the audience is dangerously slim.

Launching into 'Leave It Alone' the Operator Please immediately act as guardians to the rowdy crowd. Containing enough sass to make Blood Red Shoes stop dead in their tracks they are subtle blend of The Ting Tings doused in The Noisettes. Yet the group are far from energetic resorting to cute on-stage movements rather than a burst of electricity. Lead singer Amandah spends most of her time giving mixed attitudes towards the audience as she stands, hands on hips giving a constant look of disgust while flitting from smile to smile.

As the group dip into highlights of their debut it lacks any real depth while the band members remain moderately stagnant on stage. The band rarely show any sign of excitement until a cover of Salt’n’Pepper’s ‘Push It’ becomes an on stage jamming session. It’s a definite highlight of the night, for novelty value if anything else. Finally ending on ‘Just A Song About Ping Pong’ it shows how much the band still have to develop. It should be a call to arms, a grand finale delivered in a brash manner. Instead the band tip toe on their audience, batter their eyelids and show they still have a long way to go to before they are playing to adults.
