Summer Sundae, August 8, De Montfort Hall, Leicester
Unfortunately thanks to the inaccuracy of Googly Maps this weekend does not get off to the smoothest of starts. Having missed Youthmovies we make a quick dash for The Mae Shi, and instantly find a group to match our confused state of mind. Proving Kappa jackets are still cool, parachutes are not just for girl guides and audience participation never grows old, the group are a mash of organised chaos from start to finish. Then after a quick lounge in the sun and an opportunity to relax, Adam and Joe ("you may remember us from the 90s"- Joe quips) introduce King Creosote. An easy listening bundle of fun the group are a perfect festival outfit.
Fuck Buttons are here to shake things up however with their loud screamo trance. After the initial shock the duo rumble the tent with their dark beats and electro beeps. The Coral are always destined to be a festival band. Now strapped to a greatest hits they deliver just that. As the young ones enjoy the show they are indeed family friendly and nothing short of beautifully wholesome. A quick dash to the Rising Stage however sees Howling Bells play a little rough around the edges. Drilled with a dirty background they fail to make any reactions, favouring new material for a short set.
Supergrass (you may remember them from the 90s) are another group who have strapped themselves into a greatest hits. They released an album earlier this year (2008) but you'd never know it. From 'Moving' the crowd suddenly come alive clearly favouring the old classics. 'Richard III', 'Caught By the Fuzz' and 'Suns Hits the Sky' are all given an airing along with an encore of 'Lenny' that even has a ten-year-old dancing like there's no tomorrow.
