Tellison, Tubelord, Above Them at The Priory, July 25

This evening’s combination of post-rock groups are a little lost on the under 18's audience.
Above Them are three skinny guys from Pontefract who’ve spent the past year perfecting their live show- it’s definitely taken affect. From the first note lifted from their EP ‘Put Your Heart Into This’, the trio have already shaken the underage kids, leaving the core audience shattered, bruised and ready for more. With their complex melodies and power guitars, there are clear nods toward Hundred Reasons and Biffy, yet as they kick into 'Keep Smiling' the group show enough potential to live up to their influences.

Tubelord, however, are a mixed musical bag. With a singer whose voice is similar to many thrash indie groups, their performance screams student desperation. Decked in large black rimmed glasses and dirty dyed blonde hair, the group spend the majority of their set flitting between quiet, twee melodies and large, over-complex riffs. The dual harmonies occasionally show the group's potential but it merely lasts seconds before it’s pushed aside for loud brashness. Yet, somehow, the songs create an amazing combination, leaving Tubelord a likely addition to many student iPods across the country.

Over the years, Tellison appear to have fallen into the wrong pigeonholes. Unlike Above Them and Tubelord, the quartet may be the indiest to have ever been mistaken as a post-rock outfit - the first half of their set is not a step away from early Automatic and Hot Club De Paris. The vocal-led 'Disaster' has haunts of The Futureheads while their keyboardist’s instrument overrides damn near every instrument onstage. As the percussion driven 'Ambulance' creates a furore, the group's new tracks disappoint, showing little progress from their previous material. However, as they kick into the encore of 'Amory', they’re clearly an enthusiastic, exciting band - if they fall into the right audience who knows what they're capable of.
