Bright Paper Werewolves, The Fabulous Stains, Monkey vs Robot at Vintage Rockbar, February 23
Tonight what started out as a routine gig has slowly transcended into a rather different set of affairs. All three bands on the bill are either breaking up, or starting out afresh as the audience are left completely confused by the actions onstage.
Monkey vs Robot are playing their first and last gig tonight, and it fails to impress. The room is overcrowded and half the audience are either catching up with old friends or looking vaguely interested in the performance. All members are far too aggressive, especially considering the light uninspiring music they continue to perform.
The Fabulous Stains are also starting a new chapter tonight but this group are a little more used to the stage. Taking on a heavier role than their predecessors they manage to capture the audience's attention within minutes. They do take a slightly different approach to their previous outfit but ultimately they can't stray away from their pop vibes, as every song quickly transforms into hit after hit. Maybe in a name change the band were hoping to change expectations, but they've managed to raise the bar yet again.
Since the Werewolves split in 2004 no one is willing to take this second 'last gig' seriously. There are jokes that the band will be back together within months but if the last performance is anything to go by, it proved Bright Paper Werewolves have had their day. They're a shambolic mess from start to finish, and it becomes a repetitive frustration to find the set only lasts half an hour due to various inter band discussions. Guitars are out of tune, lyrics are thrown away within the first song and the drum kit is in pieces. What can we say? At least the Werewolves went in style.
